Tips for parents and carers

Older children (e.g., 11-12 years):

  • If you are a parent of an older child, try and go with what they prefer.

  • Let them decide what works best for them (whether to work through it on their own, or with you).

Younger children (e.g., 6-10 years):

  • If you are a parent of a younger child, complete this as a parent-guided treatment.

  • Think about the timing of when to work on the website.

  • Set aside a regular time (e.g., 15 minutes, twice a week over 4 weeks).

  • Try and reduce other distractions (set your phone to silent, turn off the TV).

  • Find a time when you are not in a rush.

  • You could either print out each part, or look at each section on a laptop or device, read it together and work through the exercises.

Is it a shared loss you have been through?

  • If it is a shared loss that you have been through with your child (e.g., loss of your partner or child), helping your child with some of these exercises is likely to be upsetting for you.

  • Think about whether it is useful for you to seek further support for yourself at this time (see Grief Australia: Grief and Bereavement Support Grief Australia)

  • Be gentle with yourself, think also about your own needs for support as you and your child work through the website.

  • Join in with your child with some of the cool down activities’ after looking at the website.

  • Talk to your GP about if you think a referral for further support may be helpful, or see these websites:
